While "That's Life" was first recorded by Marion Montgomery, the vocal came to the attention of Frank Sinatra when he heard O.C. Smith'southward chart-climbing cover in his automobile in 1965. He stopped the car, chosen his daughter Nancy and told her to find the publisher of the song because he wanted to record information technology; she did. Sinatra outset performed the song on his television special A Man and His Music – Role Two in 1966, with an organisation past Nelson Riddle.

The recorded version, made on July 25, 1966 at United Recording, Hollywood, was arranged and conducted by Ernie Freeman and produced by Jimmy Bowen.[4] The trio had previously worked together earlier in 1966 on "Strangers in the Night",[5] which got Sinatra the Grammy Award for All-time Male person Vocal.[6] For "That'due south Life", the background singers were the vocal contractor and singer B.J. Bakery, along with Gwen Johnson and Jackie Ward. twoscore offset-chair musicians were also assembled for Sinatra'southward recording including Glen Campbell and many of the members of the Wrecking Coiffure. Sinatra took ii passes at the song. He ended the first take with, "Oh yeah." Bowen asked him to perform information technology once more, which annoyed 'one take' Sinatra – resulting in the bitter performance Bowen was looking for - which Sinatra tagged with the defiant, "My, My." LA session role player Mike Melvoin performed the Hammond organ solo on the recording.[ commendation needed ]

Bowen's vision for the residuum of the album was to mirror "That's Life" onto the other songs so they all sounded like, rather than make full information technology with what he viewed as typical Sinatra-style songs. This was equally a result of his work on the Strangers in the Dark anthology, where Bowen felt that the titular single did not lucifer the rest of the album, which was more of a classic Sinatra audio. So for the That's Life album, the other anthology tracks had similar brass accompaniments.[7]

Both the anthology and the song proved major successes for Sinatra. The vocal was a number-four hit on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and reached number i on the Easy Listening chart for iii weeks in December 1966/Jan 1967.[8] In Canada, the song reached number three.[ix] Sinatra'due south cover of "That'due south Life" was later used in the 1993 film A Bronx Tale alongside his recording of "Same Old Song and Dance".[x] It was also featured in the 2004 video game Tony Hawk'southward Underground 2.[11] The song was also in the 1988 flick License to Drive, a scene where the chief graphic symbol puts clown makeup on and the final scene of the 2019 film Joker, and during the last scene of the concluding episode of the sixth season of the NBC television comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Normally afterward domicile losses, the Vegas Aureate Knights play the Sinatra version at T-Mobile Arena.

Other versions [edit]

Although the O.C. Smith version had proved successful in areas such Detroit and Los Angeles, it was not until Sinatra's cover of it went loftier in the charts that the earlier version was released nationally.[12] As well as the Smith release, "That's Life" was covered on several albums post-obit Sinatra's success with it, including the Aretha Franklin album Aretha Arrives,[13] in addition to recordings by The Temptations, Shirley Bassey, and James Chocolate-brown.[14] [fifteen] Dark-brown recorded the song for his 1968 anthology Alive at the Apollo, Volume II. Brownish'south studio-recorded version appeared on the soundtrack for the 1999 picture show EDtv.[15] Former Van Halen frontman, David Lee Roth, released a version and video, in 1986, for his showtime solo LP Eat 'Em and Smile.[16]Deana Martin besides recorded "That'southward Life" on her 2016 released album, Swing Street.

This was not the only occasion when a embrace of the song appeared on a film's soundtrack. In 2002, a recording past Bono and equanimous by Elliot Goldenthal appeared on the soundtrack for The Skillful Thief.[17] The song was as well covered in "Opening Night", a 2nd-season episode of the American television series Smash, by Katharine McPhee and Megan Hilty.[18] Vik Sahay performed the vocal on an episode of Preacher.
